Healthier LifeSteps for Healthy Families

The AMA Alliance is working with the AMA to provide data, useful information and practical resources for Healthier Life Steps for medical families.  Four key health behaviors are significantly related to heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other conditions: (1) poor diet, (2) physical inactivity, (3) tobacco use and (4) excessive or risky use of alcohol.  Taking steps now to improve these key lifestyle behaviors can help prevent and manage these conditions.

The best way to improve over all fitness is to increase activity.  The Department of Health and Human Services states that the benefits of increased activity include:

  1. Reduces the risk of dying prematurely from heart disease and other conditions
  2. Reduces the risk of developing diabetes
  3. Reduces the risk of developing high blood pressure;
  4. Reduces blood pressure in people who already have high blood pressure;
  5. Reduces the risk of developing colon and breast cancer
  6. Helps to maintain a healthy weight
  7. Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints
  8. Helps older adults to become stronger and better able to move about without falling
  9. Reduces feelings of depression and anxiety
  10. Promotes psychological well-being
